Sensory Guide - Google Maps New Feature

User Experience course. Guided by Tom Bar-Gal. 2020

UX progress for a new feature in Google Maps Mobile App.

Google maps

Is a web mapping service developed by Google. It offers satellite imagery, street maps, real-time traffic conditions, and route planning for traveling by foot, car, bicycle and air.

We chose the Google Maps service to help people that have autism commute as freely as possible and without encountering any neural stimuli that might limit their travel.

Group Features

Autism is a developmental disorder characterized by difficulties with social interaction, communication, and restricted and repetitive behavior.

Autistic people suffer from a difficulty in their sensory regulation, which regulates the type of stimulus that is absorbed in their neural system.

- Difficulty enduring noise coupled with a strong hearing ability

-  Difficulty enduring density/ crowded situations and contact with foreign objects.

- Difficulty enduring strong lighting.

The Problem

Difficulty in regulating stimulus limits hassle-free commutes for fear of encountering crowded, noisy and strongly lit places.

The Solution

Informing the user whether the destination they chose to go to is crowded, noisy or strongly lit.

We offer the user the freedom to decide whether or not to arrive at their destination at the specific hour or day they chose, helping them prepare in advance.
